Tuberculosis Program Evaluation and Research Unit

The Tuberculosis Program Evaluation and Research Unit (TB PE & RU) was created in 1998 out of seed money from Alberta Health and the University of Alberta. The TB PE&RU operates on the assumption that strategic planning and TB elimination requires ongoing evaluation of existing programs as well as operational research. Through successful grant applications and contracts over the past 16 years the Unit has evolved and formalized.
About Us
The TB PE & RU provides programming and data analysis support to national, provincial, regional and local public health and health care organizations to inform strategic planning and resource management specific to tuberculosis prevention and care. The Unit aims to contribute directly or indirectly towards the elimination of tuberculosis in Alberta and Canada through education, effective stakeholder liaisons and the creation of a "TB think tank" where academic research is bridged to health care providers in the field.
Publications
The Tuberculosis Program Evaluation & Research Unit was founded in 1998. The publications have been split into two areas:
TB Education in Aboriginal and Non-Aboriginal Youth in the Prairies
This guide, Tuberculosis Education for Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Youth, was developed to provide high school teachers across Canada, but in particular in the Prairie Provinces, with an abundance of information related to tuberculosis identification, the connection of tuberculosis to other diseases and behaviors, and tuberculosis history that they might use in the classroom.
Tuberculosis has been called a "social disease with a medical aspect", this guide emphasizes that. Included are suggested activities and resources to help teachers build their lessons. In addition, suggestions about how to fit the topic of TB in to a number of different subject areas and adaptations for all activities are provided.
Our TB Education Resource Guide was chosen to be the TB Highlight of the month in the CDC's Find TB Resources E-Newsletter for the month of August, 2012!
